We are dedicated to improving the health and lives of the pets and people we serve at Sylvan Veterinary Hospital. Sometimes this means providing advanced veterinary care to our pet patients. Whether it’s performing an orthopedic surgery to repair a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) or pet dental surgery to save a damaged tooth, our experienced veterinarians have the skills needed to ensure a healthy outcome for your pet.
Following are some of the specialty pet health services we offer:
There are many orthopedic disorders that can affect our pets, from hip and elbow dysplasia to luxating patella, also known as a dislocated kneecap. Since these disorders are more likely to appear in certain breeds, it’s important to screen your pet to make sure that he or she will not pass them down to future generations.
Sylvan Veterinary Hospital is pleased to be one of the few animal hospitals with veterinarians who are certified in performing the PennHIP methodology. PennHIP screenings test the laxity of the canine hip joints to determine how loose they are. The looser the hips, the higher the probability that a dog will develop hip dysplasia.
Because hip laxity doesn’t change once a dog reaches the age of 5 months, screenings for hip dysplasia can be conducted much earlier using this method. In addition, it has been found to be a more accurate predictor of the disorder than previous screening methodologies.
OFA evaluations are used to identify a variety of orthopedic disorders in pets, ranging from hip and elbow dysplasia to spinal and knee disorders. During these screenings, digital X-rays are produced and sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for evaluation to determine whether a pet is likely to develop a disorder and potentially pass it on to his or her offspring.
Our veterinary surgeons are skilled at performing a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including:
- Fracture repairs using bone plates
- Surgical treatment of hip dysplasia
- Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) repair in knees using advanced TightRope Surgical Repair
- Luxating patella
We have extensive safety protocols in place and will do everything possible to ensure your pet is comfortable and secure—before, during, and after the procedure.
Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery
This advanced surgical method allows our veterinarians to perform operations through tiny incisions that are about the size of a standard writing pen (5 mm). Because the surgery is so precise and targeted, it enables us to greatly reduce the amount of trauma and tissue damage experienced by patients. This means less pain and inflammation, more rapid healing, and a quicker recovery period. Our veterinarians use laparoscopic surgery to perform:
- Cryptorchid surgeries
- Urinary bladder stone removals
- Gastropexy procedures (to protect large-breed dogs from torsion bloat)
- Exploratory procedures
- Surgical artificial insemination
Advanced Pet Dental Care
Pet dental care is an important part of your pet’s overall wellness plan. We offer full-service oral care, including endodontic treatments for malocclusions and fractured teeth. In the case of malocclusions, our veterinarians will assist pets whose irregular bites prevent them from being able to close their mouths normally. Usually this involves filing down teeth.
Tooth fractures may be caused by a variety of factors, whether it’s chewing on hard toys, rawhides, or a foreign object, or perhaps by an accidental trauma. Treatment for the fracture will depend on the type of damage involved. If the fracture only penetrates the enamel, or the enamel and dentin, then it is basically just a “chip” in the tooth. There is no pain or bleeding involved. Our veterinarians will “bond” the tooth, sealing and covering the chip. This makes the tooth appear normal and protects it from infection.
When a fracture is severe, it involves the enamel, dentin, and the pulp—the nerve and blood vessels inside the tooth. In these cases, the sooner veterinary care is provided, the better. If our veterinarians are able to treat such fractures within the first 48 hours, it’s possible that a vital pulp capping procedure will suffice, enabling the tooth to be kept alive. Otherwise, a root canal or extraction may be in order. To learn more about these procedures, as well as other oral services, please visit our pet dental care section.
Class 4 Laser Therapy
This FDA-approved therapy is widely used in human and veterinary medicine. It provides relief from pain and inflammation while also stimulating healing. Our veterinarians will use it to treat a variety of conditions, including ear infections and soft tissue or muscle injuries. It is also very helpful for pets that are rehabilitating from orthopedic surgery or experiencing pain from arthritis.
Laser therapy may be used in conjunction with pet pain medications or in place of them when pets are unable to handle medicine due to sensitivities or disease.
We are pleased to offer a variety of services to assist pet owners who are seeking to breed their dogs. These include:
- Fertility evaluations for both males and females
- Canine artificial insemination using fresh chilled or frozen semen
- Dog pregnancy evaluations and monitoring
Please visit our artificial insemination section to learn more.
American Animal Hospital Association’s process of accreditation is similar to what human hospitals go through.
Just wanted to let you know that Allie is doing great after Lap Spay on 4-10-12. Took her one day and she was back to normal. What a great way to get a dog spayed- I will recommend it to all my friends. Here is a photo of Allie that I took yesterday in our pasture with California Poppies. I thought it was cute! Thanks again!!
I have been taking my Beagle, Destiny, to Sylvan Vet for the last 10 years. She has had many medical problems throughout her life. There were times that I didn’t think she was going to pull though, yet, with wonderful Veterinarians like Dr. Tiffany Cardoza and Dr. Kipp Magnussen, she is still here with me today. I am grateful for their expertise in knowing exactly what she needs and for their compassion towards the both of us, in our hour of need. We are very blessed to know that compassionate help is always there. My deepest thanks and appreciation.
Sylvan Veterinary Hospital has been an important part of our family’s life for several years now. Most recently they helped to preserve our pug Sweetie’s vision with a new surgery technique. Everyone in the hospital works diligently to serve our needs. There is open communication with the front office staff, the technicians and the doctors whenever necessary. Our concerns and questions are always addressed quickly and the doctors are always available to us whenever needed.

What a great neighborhood veterinary clinic! I love the convenient hours and boarding facility. They have a nice, friendly staff and team of doctors who involve me in making the right choice for my pet.
I can’t say enough about the miraculous results you can get from laser therapy. I used it for my puppy’s foot wound that wouldn’t hold stitches. The wound was completely closed in three treatments-without a scar! Also, this pup has elbow dysplasia and laser has helped him quickly regain soundness when he played too roughly. And the best part- it’s not expensive. I’m a tried-and-true believer of this technology.

Eleven years ago, Dr. Kipp Magnussen saved the life of my young kitten and I was genuinely impressed with his compassion and competence. Over the years I have been extremely happy with the care all the vets and vet techs have provided for my various dogs and cats. In addition, it is a mark of commitment to the highest standards of quality medical care that Sylvan Vet is accredited through the AAHA. I continue to highly recommend this clinic.

We have been a client of Sylvan Vet for the past 20 years. Just recently, Bodie, our Chocolate Lab experienced a wound to his back that was quite serious. After two months of patience, determination and constant care by Dr. Kipp Magnussen, Bodie has been nursed back to health. Kipp's staff has become family to us. Each and every one of them is kind, friendly and compassionate! Bodie just celebrated his tenth Birthday and is even swimming again. Thank you Sylvan Vet!!
I love the doctors and staff at Sylvan Veterinary Hospital for the care and compassion they have given my dogs over the years. From luxating patella surgery to nail cleaning, the care level is the highest. I would recommend them to any and all pet owners.
