Regenerative Medicine

rehab services

Regenerative medicine technology takes the body’s own cells that have the capability to heal and harnesses them into a biological treatment. The technology is able to specifically concentrate the patient’s own platelets and or bone marrow stem cells to improve and accelerate healing in a very safe treatment. Although regenerative medicine therapy is considered cutting edge technology, the benefits have been studied in dogs for about 20 years as the model for human applications.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy – What kind of injuries can this therapy treat?

PRP and stem cell therapy can be used for acute or chronic conditions. It has been shown to have benefit in the treatment of Achilles tendon injuries, cruciate ligament injuries, complicated orthopedic fractures and delayed bone healing, as well as, chronic arthritis and tendonitis of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and hock. The number of injections performed depends upon the severity and type of condition being treated.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy - How does it work?

As most people know, platelets are one of the first cells on site of an injury and they help form the scaffolding for the initial blood clot. Platelets are also loaded with substances that stimulate healing, new blood vessel, and tissue growth (e.g. platelet derived growth factor, epithelial growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, etc.). Platelets are also responsible for bringing in white blood cells to the injured area to clean up the remains of dead and injured cells. It is for these reasons PRP can be an effective, safe treatment to promote and accelerate healing in tendon, ligament, muscle, and joint injuries, which normally tend to be slow to heal.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy – Is PRP therapy safe?

Since the technology harvests and concentrates the pet’s own cells, it is very safe and has no risk of rejection.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy - What is the procedure?

The entire procedure typically last around 20-30 minutes. The pet is lightly sedated and their blood is collected. The blood is then ran through a special centrifuge, which separates and concentrates the platelets 3X-5X what is found in normal circulating blood. If stem cells are to be used in the therapy, an aspirate of cells from the bone marrow will be added to the process. The affected joint, tendon, or ligament is then injected with approximately 1- 4 ml’s of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy – How effective is treatment?

Scientific data suggests that around 90% of dogs treated with significant lameness experience a clinically compelling improvement in lameness when rated by both dog owners and veterinarians alike. Frequently, chronic injuries require more than one injection and up to three injections for a response. In both acute and chronic injuries, injections are usually combined with a physical therapy program, initially. The treatment can last 6 months to a year in many pets and may require only one treatment in some acute injuries.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy – How will my pet feel and recover after treatment?

Some dogs will display some discomfort for the first 1-2 days that can be treated with cold compress, laser therapy, and non-NSAID pain relievers. Depending on the condition being treated, most pets should be restricted to controlled leash walks for the first week and started into a physical therapy program. Most owners report seeing benefits with the first few days, and a small number of owners have reported a mild to moderate relapse of symptoms about 2 weeks after treatment before seeing sustained improvement.

Just wanted to let you know that Allie is doing great after Lap Spay on 4-10-12. Took her one day and she was back to normal. What a great way to get a dog spayed- I will recommend it to all my friends. Here is a photo of Allie that I took yesterday in our pasture with California Poppies. I thought it was cute! Thanks again!!

I have been taking my Beagle, Destiny, to Sylvan Vet for the last 10 years. She has had many medical problems throughout her life. There were times that I didn’t think she was going to pull though, yet, with wonderful Veterinarians like Dr. Tiffany Cardoza and Dr. Kipp Magnussen, she is still here with me today. I am grateful for their expertise in knowing exactly what she needs and for their compassion towards the both of us, in our hour of need. We are very blessed to know that compassionate help is always there. My deepest thanks and appreciation.

Sylvan Veterinary Hospital has been an important part of our family’s life for several years now. Most recently they helped to preserve our pug Sweetie’s vision with a new surgery technique. Everyone in the hospital works diligently to serve our needs. There is open communication with the front office staff, the technicians and the doctors whenever necessary. Our concerns and questions are always addressed quickly and the doctors are always available to us whenever needed.

I can’t say enough about the miraculous results you can get from laser therapy. I used it for my puppy’s foot wound that wouldn’t hold stitches. The wound was completely closed in three treatments-without a scar! Also, this pup has elbow dysplasia and laser has helped him quickly regain soundness when he played too roughly. And the best part- it’s not expensive. I’m a tried-and-true believer of this technology.

Eleven years ago, Dr. Kipp Magnussen saved the life of my young kitten and I was genuinely impressed with his compassion and competence. Over the years I have been extremely happy with the care all the vets and vet techs have provided for my various dogs and cats. In addition, it is a mark of commitment to the highest standards of quality medical care that Sylvan Vet is accredited through the AAHA. I continue to highly recommend this clinic.

We have been a client of Sylvan Vet for the past 20 years. Just recently, Bodie, our Chocolate Lab experienced a wound to his back that was quite serious. After two months of patience, determination and constant care by Dr. Kipp Magnussen, Bodie has been nursed back to health. Kipp's staff has become family to us. Each and every one of them is kind, friendly and compassionate! Bodie just celebrated his tenth Birthday and is even swimming again. Thank you Sylvan Vet!!
